My Approach to Therapy

My approach begins with a focus on the therapeutic relationship. The bottom line is that if you don't feel good about working with your therapist or you aren't on the same page, therapy isn't likely to be effective. That’s why I place a prime emphasis on providing a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment. My style is highly collaborative.

My theoretical orientation is "integrative," which is just a way of saying I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all solution. I draw from several evidence-based modalities to tailor a plan that's right for you. Ultimately, I strive to follow an evidence-based practice, which means I consider three things: the best available research, my experience as a psychologist, and your particular situation, preferences, and values. The treatment goals and plan will always be developed with you.

Therapeutic Approaches I Use

Here's a glimpse into some of the approaches I utilize most often and what that might look like for you:

Psychodynamic & Interpersonal Therapies

To better understand your current concerns, it can be helpful to explore your past and identify recurring themes in your life, especially in your relationships. We'll also make space to pay attention to and process emotions.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

We'll work together to identify how your thoughts (cognitions) and actions (behaviors) are connected to your feelings. By learning to change those patterns, you can change how you feel and see your symptoms improve.

Mindfulness & Acceptance-Based Therapies (DBT, ACT)

Sometimes, fighting against our own emotions only makes things worse. We can often benefit from focusing on nonjudgmental acceptance. It’s also helpful to learn practical skills to better manage difficult emotions.

Person-Centered & Multicultural Counseling

I provide a supportive environment, listen carefully to understand your point of view, and accept you for who you are. To truly understand you and your concerns, it’s critical for me to understand your values, your beliefs, and your cultural contexts (societal, socioeconomic, etc.).
